Teaching Your Kids About Personal Finance

It is never too early to teach kids about personal finance. Many elementary schools are coaching children about money. They encourage students to set up a store of their choice and allow them to ‘do business’ with one another. Fake money and creative imaginations have gone a long way. These children see the results of how quickly their fake money disappears from spending too much or from making bad business choices. In kindergarten, these lessons begin by teaching needs versus wants.

Kids and Money ? Developing Financial Understanding by Learning the Vocabulary of Money

Many parents try to explain to their child the current economic situation, but find the words get in the way, literally.  In order to explain anything there must be a commonly understood vocabulary.  And therein lies the challenge. 

The first challenge is the number of words related to the economy and financial matters, not counting all the acronyms like FDIC and APR.  The English language contains hundreds of word and phrases related to financial matters.  The next challenge is that many of these words describe sophisticated concepts which are difficult to explain and are not widely understood in the first place (For example, how many of us can rattle off an explanation for capitalization?).

A Few Good Tips for Teaching Personal Finance to Your Kids

The world of finance has changed dramatically over the course of recent decades. It wasn’t all that long ago that all that a young person really needed was an active savings account and some common sense and they were pretty much OK. Times have really changed though and now each day a persons mailbox is stuffed with glossy come-ons from predatory lenders that only point up the fact that banks are no longer the “friend” of the consumer.
